Any suggestions?

So, we're not super-prepared for the baby . . . we do have a car seat and now even some diapers. The good news is we can now get him home from the hospital. We're collecting and gathering . . . and I'm looking for any suggestions from people with more experience with babies than me (which just happens to be the bulk of my friends).

Particularly . . . does any have a baby book they love? . . . the "first years/memories" type? I've been on the hunt and haven't found anything wonderful so far.

And, is there anything else you just can't live without that is a well-kept secret?

My suggestions have to do with laundry: The best way I found to get out the poop stains (even if you wait for a day or two) is to soak the clothes in a container of powder OxyClean & water. It works every time for me! Just remember that the worse the stain, the longer it needs to soak. Also, I buy a small mesh laundry bag for the baby socks (so you don't loose any). Do you have any prego pictures you want to post? ;)

Good luck! I'm so excited for you. No good suggestions! LOL Just remember that they aren't too breakable and they grow and change everyday so try to enjoy every minute. And sleep when you can! Sheesh, I still feel like I am trying to catch up on sleep.....

it's definitely not a secret, but we love our baby bjorn. i would definitely recommend getting one. it's worth the investment. the other kinds of baby carriers just aren't as easy to use. if you have someone say they love theirs, they haven't had a bjorn. really. i've seen lots of people convert.
oh, and as far as baby stains, oxyclean is great, but i love spray'n'wash resolve power. i've had nasty stains come out with that stuff that i didn't pre-treat. i just sprayed it on and stuck it in the wash. not completely fool-proof, but it's gotten most of ours out.
that's really exciting to be so close.

Get the books, Babywise and Happiest Baby on the Block. Everyone focuses on the nursery, clothes and the delivery. They forget that they have NO idea what to do once the baby comes home. Those books kind of contradict each other, but if you take the best from both, you'll be in great hands!

P.S. Travis and I use the same email, so you're good to go.

Well, you might have already gotten these at your shower, but I personally always like having baggies in my purse at all times to put soiled clothing or poopy diapers in. They have blue ones that smell like baby powder in a cute little roll. Breast pads are a must if you are breast feeding and cream for your nipples...I used it after nursing every time until my nipples got used to the pain! Maybe just some good books to read or movies to watch or magazines. That is all good when you are in the house so much with a brand new little one.

Swaddle blankets! We stopped swaddling our little one when we got home from the hospital. We started again when he was 6 weeks old because we noticed he kept smacking himself in the face while he was falling asleep. Once we went back to swaddling, he started sleeping better. I love the swaddleme brand.
Read a couple of sleep books, but don't stress out when none of the tips work for your particular sleep issues. They're good guides, but they made me feel like a failure when nothing was working!
Give breastfeeding a real chance--it takes a few weeks to get the hang of it (it took me about 10 weeks!).
Most important, find what works for YOU and your baby. I've found, for us, routines work better than schedules.
Good luck!

Everyone gave you some fabulous advice. Get rest where and when you may. Don't expect your baby to sleep as often as they say they will. If you are going to attempt nursing: My kids also nursed constantly until they were a few months old and whatever the lactation consultant says, it does hurt--sometimes badly--for awhile (I nursed 4 babies to over a year so I feel like I am a real-life expert of that fact). Regular Desitin (that nasty white paste) is the best for rash. Good luck!!!
